Why Networks Matter
Information about Medicare provided by Alight Retiree Health Solutions
When you’re shopping for Medicare coverage, it’s important to understand the health plan’s network – the doctors and other providers with whom a plan contracts to provide care at a lower cost. Make sure your doctors are “in-network” to avoid paying more.

Medicare Advantage plans
If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can choose from a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan.
HMO plans require you to get care from doctors in the plan’s network. If you use a doctor outside the network, the plan may not cover the cost. PPO plans have a network of “preferred” doctors, and in most cases, you can see anyone in the network. If you see a doctor that’s not in network, you may pay a greater share, but the PPO typically covers some of the expenses.
Medicare Supplement plans
Medicare Supplement plans don’t have networks; you can see any doctor who takes Medicare. If your doctor doesn’t take Medicare, you may pay more, so be sure to ask before your appointment.
You can use Medicare’s physician compare tool to find doctors who accept Medicare.
